THE LOCKDOWN SESSIONS - Every Monday at 6pm.  Each musician presents a short set of music recorded from their homes, and joins us for the culminating concert & hang.

Or Bareket
Born in Jerusalem to parents of Moroccan, Iraqi, Argentinian, and Eastern European descent and raised between Buenos-Aires and Tel-Aviv, Or Bareket is currently emerging as one of the most in-demand and versatile bassists on the New York and global jazz scene, as well as a composer/bandleader with a unique sound and aesthetic.

Winner of the 1st prize at the International Society of Bassists' jazz competition in 2011, Or’s diverse heritage is clearly present in his playing and writing. His distinct lyricism, rhythmic dexterity, and groove-centric approach are informed by Mediterranean, Latin- American, and North African folklores, interpreted through his life-long study and appreciation of Black American music, and distilled through his own life experience as a musical nomad.

Luis Bonilla
“As for his resounding identity as a trombonist, it’s not enough to say his sound is personal”.

Nat Hentoff
If ever an artist could be called an octopus, multi Grammy winner Luis Bonilla is it. The California raised, Costa Rican trombonist, composer and arranger has sought out, taken in and mastered an incredible array of musical styles. His success as a performer with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, McCoy Tyner, Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Bowie, Phil Collins, The Skatalites, Tom Harrell, Freddie Hubbard, Bebo Valdez, Alejandro Sanz, Dave Douglas, Astrud Gilberto and Willie Colon attests not only to the skill and variety of Bonilla’s talent, but also to a mind restlessly committed to exploring some of the most complex and demanding music of our time. Critics have praised his six releases as a solo artist. Mr. Bonilla’s dominating ability to give voice to radically different musical sensibilities with an ease and seamlessness belies the rigor and sophistication of the music. Bonilla has an intuitive sense in how to bring out the best in those working with him. Based in New York City for nearly three decades, Luis continues being one of the most sought after international educators and performers of his generation.

Sara Caswell
2018 Grammy Nominee Sara Caswell is fast becoming one of today’s foremost jazz violinists through her technical facility and gift for lyricism. Recognized as a “Rising Star” in the DownBeat Magazine Critics and Readers Polls every year since 2013, Sara’s artistry and unique sound lead Grammy-winning violinist Mark O’Connor to write: “What Sara creates with her instrument...is beautifully refined emotion that lifts the spirit.” Sara has released three highly-acclaimed CDs: First Song and But Beautiful under her own name, and most recently Alive in the Singing Air in partnership with her sister, vocalist Rachel Caswell. She leads the Sara Caswell Quartet, co-leads the Caswell Sisters Quintet, and regularly performs with mandolinist Joseph Brent’s 9 Horses. In addition to touring for two years with bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding's Chamber Music Society, Sara has toured with clarinetist David Krakauer’s The Big Picture, vocalist Roseanna Vitro's quintet, Mark O’Connor’s American String Celebration, and violinist Darol Anger’s Four Generations of Jazz Violin. She has performed and/or recorded with such artists as Brad Mehldau, Fred Hersch, Fabian Almazan, Linda Oh, Laila Biali, Regina Carter, Jenny Scheinman, Alan Ferber, Ike Sturm, Nadje Noordhuis, Lynne Arriale, Charlie Byrd, Skitch Henderson, Gene Bertoncini, Kishi Bashi, and Bruce Springsteen. She is a member of the New York Pops Orchestra with whom she has been a featured soloist several times in Carnegie Hall, and was part of the house band for NBC's weekly variety show “Maya & Marty” starring Maya Rudolph and Martin Short.

Nadje Noorhuis
Described as "one of the most compelling voices to emerge on her instrument in recent years" (Dan Bilawksy, All about Jazz), Australian-born based trumpeter/composer Nadje Noordhuis possesses one of the most unforgettably lyrical voices in modern music. Her deeply-felt, clarion tone and evocative compositional gift meld classical rigor, jazz expression, and world music accents into a sound that is distinctively her own.

Noordhuis was one of ten semi-finalists in the 2007 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition and was selected as a Carnegie Hall Young Artist in 2012. Based in New York since 2003, she is a member of the multiple Grammy-winning Maria Schneider Orchestra, Grammy-nominated Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, and the Grammy-nominated Anat Cohen Tentet.

She has three albums of original compositions on her record label, Little Mystery Records. Her debut jazz quintet album featuring Grammy nominees Sara Caswell and Geoffrey Keezer was released to critical acclaim in 2012. Her 2015 contemplative duo album of miniatures with pianist Luke Howard has garnered much international attention, with multi-million streams on Spotify and YouTube. Her 2017 album with vibraphonist/synthesist James Shipp was premiered at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival in Australia.

Her new genre-bending quintet with Maeve Gilchrist (celtic harp), Jesse Lewis (electric guitar), Ike Sturm (electric bass), and James Shipp (synthesizers, percussion) coolly blends acoustic and electric instruments, seamlessly weaving her melodious compositions with threads of improvisation. Featuring her pure toned trumpet with electronic effects, this group released their album recorded live in Switzerland, as part of a vinyl-only box set on Newvelle Records in 2019. This group is currently working on their next album, slated for release in 2021, with support from a Chamber Music America Performance Plus grant.
