Having released two quintet albums and after announcing the monumental project “Large Ensemble” for autumn 2019, Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel is again setting out to focus on an iconic formation in Jazz-history: the guitar-trio.

Flanked by one of the most sought-after Jazz rhythm-section of our times, namely Scott Colley on bass and Brian Blade on drums, Muthspiel will showcase newly written compositions for this trio which will also be compiled on an album.

The trio’s origins go back to a trip to Japan in the summer of 2018, where they played a series of shows in Tokyo and concluded their stay with a recording-session at a local studio.

These recordings have been edited, mixed and mastered by Manfred Eicher and will be released as an album on ECM in early 2020.

With the exception of two jazz-standards, the record consists of new Muthspiel originals.

From the start, the three musicians engage in an everchanging musical conversation.

Pieces for acoustic-guitar counteract with tunes for electric guitar: There are two Canons in different meters and a ridiculously fast theme over rhythm-changes, to name only a few.

There is room for every musician to be featured as a soloist and while comping; all of which serves the tunes Muthspiel wrote for the band.

Brian Blade and Scott Colley form an experienced bond which is fully devoted to Muthspiel’s aesthetics, while Muthspiel and Blade both look back on countless tours and studio-sessions, such as their celebrated duo work as “Friendly Travellers”.

The trio’s music has a compelling sensuality that is floating and wide in scope. The vast soundscapes of the tunes are then played over with ease and virtuosity, always fully trusting the moment.
