The Jazz Gallery moved online on March 23rd, 2020 at the start of NYC’s COVID-19 lockdown and started TJG Online with a Happy Hour Hang hosted by pianist Shai Maestro.

The Happy Hour Hangs were a direct response to our want to engage with our community of members, and our musician friends who were all, all of a sudden, out of work. Limited to 15 people, the Hangs have become an intimate place to spend an hour with music lovers, TJG members and staff, and the musician who is hosting - each is completely different, and it is up to the musician as to how we’ll spend the hour!

One of the things about our Happy Hour Hang is that we don’t require our musicians to play live. They can if they want to, but we understood that in the early stages of moving to an online platform that the sound quality was not great, and we didn’t want to present our musicians in a less than ideal light.

However, we did want to present music, and showcase and support our musician friends. So, on April 11th, less than a month after the shutdown began, TJG Online unveiled ‘The Lockdown Sessions’ - a weekly showcase of four musicians each presenting a video set of 10-15 mins of pre-recorded music. Hosted each week by our Artistic Director, Rio Sakairi and House Manager, Edward Gavitt, the musicians are also in the house to talk about each others’ work and to chat in between sets, and to answer any questions audience members have ‘chatted in’.

"In normal times, the Jazz Gallery feels like a shared living room for New York's most creatively ambitious jazz musicians. The audience is usually dotted with off-duty artists, and in between sets, the performers tend to mingle with the crowd.

There's no way to replicate that amid quarantine, but the club is after something similar with its Lockdown Sessions, a weekly streaming series in which four musicians join a Zoom call with the Jazz Gallery's core artistic staff. One by one, each musician presents a homemade video featuring performances of new music, and in between they discuss one another's work. Paying attendees can chime in through the chat box." - The New York Times

Then, on June 25th,2020 as NYC started slowly opening up again, TJG Online debuted a weekly Livestream Concert Series!

The Joel Ross Trio was our inaugural band and they kicked off what has been a really successful series. We have been steadily learning more about online streaming so that we can get the best sound and the best video quality we can, purchasing new equipment, testing new platforms, training staff - we see it as the beginning of permanent new programming.

As we remain online only and unable to present our regular programming, TJG Online is seeking sponsorships for our Livestream Series. Sponsorship directly supports the musicians we book and is available for a full sponsorship of $1000 or a half sponsorship of $500. You are welcome to sponsor a Livestream of your choice, or have us choose for you.
